The process of brewing beer hasn’t really changed much in the last 4,000 years. Brewing beer from extract is ridiculously simple, and I recommend it as the method of choice for a newbie homebrewer. If you can boil water, stir, and keep track of time, you can brew beer from extract.
When people ask me to teach them how to brew beer, I usually just invite them over for a brew day. It’s far simpler (not to mention, more fun) to show someone the process rather than trying to explain it. That being said, only 6 short years after starting this blog, I’ve finally started writing a short primer on brewing beer from an extract-based kit. The info in the book is written from my experience; as a homebrewer, and from the experience I’ve had for the last 7 years in a production brewery. When it’s finished, I’ll have it available here.
If you’re an absolute beginner who literally knows nothing about homebrewing, I highly recommend reading John Palmer’s “How To Brew: A Crash Course in Brewing“. It’s excellent advice, and Palmer’s entire book is available online for free! I’m certainly not going to be able to tell you anything that he can’t tell you better.
The American Homebrew Association — “Learn To Brew Videos” are an excellent alternative if you’re more of a visual learner, or if you’re just lazy and hate reading. AHA was founded by Charlie Papazian, the man who wrote “The Complete Joy of Homebrewing”. The videos are short, easy to follow, and full of good information.
